Comenius project: Seeking for partners

Alava Hospital School - Finland

The Alava Hospital School from Finland is seeking for two to four partner schools to start a joint Comenius project. The school is open to discuss and define the main topic of the project among the partners. It wishes to connect the Comenius project to the school development activities and thus is interested in the following themes.

1. Hospital school as resource centre Education policy as well as health care is changing rapidly at the moment, which might influence the roles and responsibilities of the hospital schools and of the mainstream schools. Due to increasing inclusive education, pupils study more often in mainstream schools instead of hospital or special schools. Therefore the role of the hospital schools might change a bit towards the resource centre in the future. Possible subthemes could be:
• Consultative work
• Improvement of multidisciplinary collaboration
• Working methods and tools to support mainstream schools

2. Prevention of exclusion / drop-out According the latest researches, special needs students drop-our rate from primary and secondary education is higher than other students. Young adults without adequate education might have difficulties to enter to labour market which can lead to the marginalisation. Also hospitalized pupils might have severe difficulties with their studies which can increase their risk to drop out.
Possible subthemes could be for example:
• Role of the Hospital School in prevention of marginalisation

the School wishes to have your replies and proposals till the end of April 2011.
If at least three partner schools will be interested Alava school is wiling to organise preparatory meeting in Finland
Please, do not hesitate to ask further questions or clarifications.

The World Wall Hanging

Hospital schools around the world are combining to make a World Wall Hanging. This will consist of twelve squares – each one from a different hospital school. Each square will represent the school or country where it was made. An example of this is the one that was made at the Barrett Adolescent Centre School in Queensland Australia. A kangaroo and the Southern Cross feature – a kangaroo not only is representative of Australia but also of the centre which is set amongst bushland and where kangaroos roam freely. The Southern Cross is the star formation found in the southern hemisphere and features on the Aussie flag.

This activity has proven in Australia, Ireland and Finland to be quite therapeutic and rewarding. Tuija from Finland and Jody from Ireland have already produced their twelve squares and we would like nine other schools to join us so as the finished product will be a talking point of many schools around the world.

Your school would need to make twelve identical squares. The squares should be twelve inches square. The base material should be cotton but other fabrics eg felt can be used to embellish the square. Half an inch should be left around the border for the squares to be sewn together. They do not have to be complicated. It’s best to keep them simple so that clients and staff alike can participate in the project and learn new skills.

If you would like your hospital to be involved in this project, please contact:

Mr Kev Rodgers Barrett Adolescent Centre School Orford Drive WACOL QLD 4076 AUSTRALIA krodg9@eq.edu.au

When you have finished your twelve squares, you can send them to the above address and we will package up your twelve international squares and send them to you. If you write a paragraph about your school and your square we will produce a short booklet to go with the wall hanging and to be sent with your final squares.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Kev Rodgers Principal Barrett Adolescent Centre School
