The World Wall Hanging
Hospital schools around the world are combining to make a World Wall Hanging. This will consist of twelve squares – each one from a different hospital school. Each square will represent the school or country where it was made. An example of this is the one that was made at the Barrett Adolescent Centre School in Queensland Australia. A kangaroo and the Southern Cross feature – a kangaroo not only is representative of Australia but also of the centre which is set amongst bushland and where kangaroos roam freely. The Southern Cross is the star formation found in the southern hemisphere and features on the Aussie flag.
This activity has proven in Australia, Ireland and Finland to be quite therapeutic and rewarding. Tuija from Finland and Jody from Ireland have already produced their twelve squares and we would like nine other schools to join us so as the finished product will be a talking point of many schools around the world.
Your school would need to make twelve identical squares. The squares should be twelve inches square. The base material should be cotton but other fabrics eg felt can be used to embellish the square. Half an inch should be left around the border for the squares to be sewn together. They do not have to be complicated. It’s best to keep them simple so that clients and staff alike can participate in the project and learn new skills.
If you would like your hospital to be involved in this project, please contact:
Mr Kev Rodgers Barrett Adolescent Centre School Orford Drive WACOL QLD 4076 AUSTRALIA krodg9@eq.edu.au
When you have finished your twelve squares, you can send them to the above address and we will package up your twelve international squares and send them to you. If you write a paragraph about your school and your square we will produce a short booklet to go with the wall hanging and to be sent with your final squares.
We look forward to hearing from you.
