Fergal’s speech for Jan at the General Assembly

Good afternoon everyone,

It is a real privilege to speak today as we mark the important transition, the end of Jan Haverkate’s presidency after twelve years ofsSteady, thoughtful leadership.

Jan has been at the heart of the HOPE organisation for over a decade. Guiding us through periods of growth, challenge and change. Rather than list achievements, I will focus on the man I have come to know.

Jan has travelled a lot on behalf of HOPE but not out of duty but the genuine interest in connecting with colleagues and strengthening our international community. His openness to new places and peoples brought the HOPE community closer together.

What has been consistent through all his journeys is his passion for hospital teaching. Whether speaking at conferences or meeting new members, Jan’s belief in the importance of our work is clear.

Jan has always brought professionalism to every aspect of his role. He always brings dignity and pride when representing HOPE, but Jan doesn’t lead from behind a desk, he is always ready to roll up his sleeves: planning, facilitating and problem-solving. He is often a steadying force when things got busy or uncertain.

Jan has built many deep relationships across Europe and beyond. These are more than just professional relationships, but friendships built on trust and a shared commitment. This is something HOPE has really benefitted from.

As chair of our board, Jan’s approach has always been considered and inclusive. He has brought structure and reflection but also the space for ideas, creativity and collaboration. We have learned a lot working alongside him.

Jan often reminds us that life and leadership includes culture, beauty and joy. His love of music and literature reflects that. This often brings depth and perspective to his work.

His sense of humour that is both kind and well timed and lightens long days and of course we know that he has a sweet tooth.

In Jan’s first speech as the president of HOPE, Jan quoted the poet W.H. Davies

What is this life, if, full of Care

We have no time to stand and Stare

These words reflect Jan’s approach to leadership:

Present, thoughtful and always aware of what matters.

Jan, as you now move into your retirement, we feel very lucky that you will stay actively involved with HOPE as our new ambassador.
