To the ministeries for education and culture
in the member states  of the European Union

Munich, Avril, 2011

7th HOPE Congress Munich, in November 2010, hosted by the Hospital Organisation of Pedagogues in Europe -

"The Sick Child - Supported by a Network of Education and Medicine"

Dear Sir / Madam,

Enclosed we are pleased to present you with the results of the 7th HOPE Congress 'The sick Child - supported by a network of education and medicine' in the form of congress pro-ceedings.

The European Union has supported this project under the theme for 2010 of 'Combating Social Exclusion'.  For 2020 one of its aims is to reduce the number of school dropouts from its current 15% down to 10%.

Many of these pupils at risk of suffering from exclusion or not finishing their scholastic ca-reer are also those suffering from a serious illness. In the field of health the following gen-eral developments are apparent as they apply to young people:

The impressive progress in medicine calls for a response from the education systems.

In his keynote speech entitled "Cancer in Children – How to go on after therapy?" Prof. Dr. Burdach, director and head of the Pediatric Hospital Munich-Schwabing, adjunct to the Technische Universität München, reflects on the need to support these children :
"If we are able to cure children today of many diseases that were  fatal in the past, we cannot accept that these children  get better again only to then have their lives fall apart once they recover, losing out socially and becoming a burden to society. We must see to it that they get well while not losing their link to school and life."

In most EU member countries there is schooling for children and adolescents with medical conditions, at times reflecting very high standards.  However, there is a need for the educa-tion systems to respond to the new developments in health care.

The participants of the congress were convinced that the following steps were vital:

These and further questions regarding education during illness will be on the agenda of a cooperative circle of representatives of the ministries of education of several German states.

In view of a move towards increasingly coherent structures of European education systems we would like to suggest that you partake in the process, directly or indirectly.  If you are interested in supporting this work please let us know.  We will keep you updated on pro-gress.

We would also appreciate if you could nominate a national contact person in your ministry / department with responsibility for education of children with medical conditions. Could you please e-mail contact details for this person to  sekretariat@sfk.musin.de.  Should you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact us.

We look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
Sincerely
